VCR to DVD

Do you have an old VCR but aren’t sure if you want to use it?

Converting old VHS tapes to DVD sounds like a great idea, but when you are technically challenged or your old VCR technology is challenging then you might have a problem.

There are many families that still have old media such as VHS tapes laying around. Because they are nervous about damaging their tapes, or sending them in the mail these old tapes are still in storage. If this is you, don’t worry! You are normal.

VHS tapes that use older VCRs to convert their media to DVD is still the only process. So we have some practical solutions for you to consider.

Solutions to VCR to DVD conversions

1 – Have a professional transfer your media. Professional companies have been helping people like your selves for years. They have systems in place to maintain their equipment, track your project, and handle any major issues that might happen (such as broken tapes). This is costly in price, but you get the feeling of security that it is done right.

2- DIY the project. You can purchase the equipment yourself on E-Bay or Amazon. So why not do it yourself? There are pros and cons to DIY your project.

One pro is the cost factor. VCRs on line can range from $20 to $1000 depending on what you want to buy. Once you get the VCR in you hands then you will find out if it even works right. If it isn’t working properly you will find out on one of your VHS tapes. This is the risk! Are you willing to take that risk with your wedding video?

Another part of the cost factor is time! To transfer old VHS tapes to DVD it takes time, minute by minute, hour by hour. If you have 10 VHS tapes and they are 100% full and they are on regular play you are looking at 20 hours of video. But if they are on extended play they now become 80 hours of video.

Transferring video to DVD or to other digital formats isn’t difficult, it isn’t rocket science, it is easy until it goes wrong. Let me give you some examples.

We have many client VHS tapes that break as part of the process. The tape is old, brittle, and even cemented to itself. We repair, transfer and do what we can, but we know we can’t do everything.

Digital tapes are our worst offenders for video transfers. Why? Well digital footage is all or nothing! that means if there is a break in the ones and zeros by time or slight magnetic pulses from the sun the digital footage starts to fall apart. When we transfer digital tape to a computer we can come up with 100s of short video clips that last fractions of second. This is a nightmare for anyone that has digital video tapes. We have solutions that make it better, but again we can’t make it perfect.

These are a few or our issues that we find everyday as a profession video transfer company. We discover these issues from hours or transfers and if you want to get into the DIY transfer business you will find them yourself.
